Finding a Doctor: Pediatrician Search

Beginning in the late stages of pregnancy, parents often turn their thoughts to finding a good doctor. Pediatrician is the name for any physician who specializes in general care of children. Here are some tips to finding a good one.

Starting in the late stages of pregnancy, parents often turn their thoughts to finding a good doctor. Pediatrician is the name for any physician who specializes in general care of children, and it usually brings up warm feelings of offices painted in bright colors and the giving out of tasty red lollipops following a session. Of course, not every physician was made from the same mold. You want the best care possible for your child, which is why it’s so important to find a physician that can meet your needs in every way.

Oftentimes, the best place to find referrals is from your obstetrician. They will be used to guiding parents to a qualified doctor. Pediatrician directories such as the phone book and more specialized directories are another good place to start. Since it’s difficult to make judgments based on ads or even referrals, you might want to consider limiting your search to those physicians certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. If a physician is listed with them, you know that they have not only completed their requisite medical school training, but they have also been through three years of additional pediatric training in residency and passed the ABP written exam.

Of course, you don’t have to make a decision sight unseen. Don’t be afraid to set up some informal meetings with several physicians. During these meetings you can not only get a feel for their personality, you can ask them some important questions that may influence your decision. Ask them if they are affiliated with a hospital in the area. If you live in a small town with only one hospital, this may not be important. If, on the other hand, you live in a large city with many hospitals, you’ll want to make sure the hospital they are affiliated with is one you are comfortable with and is convenient to your location.

It’s also important to figure out what their costs are and how much of their services are covered by insurance. If this is your first child, you may be taken aback at how often babies and young children need medical care. These costs can skyrocket in a hurry if they are not covered by insurance. For some things, it makes sense to go out of your insurance plan or HMO. For the most partFind Article, you’ll want to stay well within the boundaries when it comes to your child’s doctor. Pediatrician costs can mount quickly if you are not careful.
