Pain, especially severe pain, can make the person crazy if no relief is found and extreme pain is usually accompanied with pain medications being part of the treatment for many people.

Unfortunately, many in our society are ingesting bottle after bottle of pain medications and this may be due less to the fact that they can't bear the pain of an illness or injury and have more to do with the fact that they can't bear dealing with their own life. Many find that once they are on the pain medications they enjoy the rush so much that they keep coming up with different excuses for why they need to refill that prescription over and over again.

It is true that prescription pain medications are taken for reasons other than what they were prescribed and this is one of the biggest reasons why there are addiction problems associated with pain medications; sadly once some people use them, they loose the power to stop and continue to misuse them. Minor illnesses or injuries can often be easily treated with over the counter medications, especially for short term use and in the long run they don't have to seek professional help to break the grip that prescription pain medication can have on some people.

As with all things that are mis or over used the body becomes accustomed to the effects of the pain medications, thus the need to find stronger and newer pain medications can create a whole new set of issues. The more a person takes any medications the less effective they become and because of the seriousness of such a scenario, it is important to only use prescription medications if the condition is serious enough to only find pain relief through them.

There are opinions being floated around that have to do with the necessity of patients that do require stronger and more potent medications, but it also seems to be part of a bigger agenda of the pharmaceutical industry as a whole and doctors indirectly to not curb or limit prescriptions of pain medications in anyone in need for any reason. If however, these medications were limited to the terminally ill or severely injured persons, it would drastically reduce the cases of new people become addicted and would reduce many of the indirect issues associated with over prescribing these medications.
