Historically, patents were issued for up to 30 years.  However, there was a great deal of legislation passed to reduce this time span significantly.  This is very helpful to the general consumer.  After all, generics are considerably more affordable.  However, because the lifespan of the patent has been reduced, it means the companies must charge more in the beginning than they did in the past.  Sometimes, depending on how much research they did, this means that they need to charge $1 to $10 per pill.  This can be quite a lot if you need to take this medication once a day or several times a day.

There are other ways that patents can work to extend their patent lifespan a few more years.  Any time a medication found a new purpose, the patent was extended.  For example, some medications extended their uses to pets.  When a patent is in effect, you cannot make a generic for it.  This is helpful to the pharmaceutical company but not very helpful to people who have a real problem they can be solved by their medication. In other words, some people do without the medication and it is detrimental to their health.

Thankfully, this is no longer the case with Viagra.  You can now buy generic Viagra without worrying about patents and the extra added expense.  However, there is a small percentage of the population that will need to stick with the name brand version.  This is due to minor chemical differences that are insignificant to almost everyone else.  For this reason, many people will choose to use a smaller amount of generic Viagra before purchasing a large amount.
