Green Tea - A Silent Remedy for Obesity

Obesity in the United States
• Any adult having a Body Mass Index between 25 and 29.9 is considered as overweight.
• Any adult having a Body Mass Index 30 or higher than 30 is considered to be as obese.


Being overweight and obesity increases many health related risks in the individuals posing the trait. Various health disasters that are parasitic to obesity are:-

• Hypertension – hypertension is due to high blood pressure in the body.

• Osteoarthritis – a cartilage is degenerated and the bone which is underlying within the joint is also degenerated.

• Dyslipidemia - examples for Dyslipidemia are high cholesterol and high triglycerides       level.

Cause of Obesity

• Overweight and obesity are a consequence of imbalance in the energy during a certain period of time. In this case energy in is greater than energy out.
Weight gain is a result of the state where a person consumes more calories then his or her body requires according to his/her activity level.

• The energy imbalance for any individual may be because of many factors. Behavior of the individual, several environmental factors, and of course genetic factors contributes to the obesity epidemic.

As per the current status, 66% of U.S. adults are considered overweight or obese.

Human Studies and Weight loss tea

Green Tea is very famous as weight loss tea. It promotes weight loss by triggering various metabolic activities. Consumption of green tea increases thermogenesis.
The thermogenic effect thus achieved was far greater than what is achieved due to caffeine which is present in the tea.

A study evaluated that compared to placebo, the intake of green tea resulted in 4% increase in energy and fat expenditure. Moreover the excretion of norepinephrine was also greater during intake of green tea extract than with placebo.
 Researches have also accounted that the consumption of caffeine did not affect energy expenditure and oxidation of fat at all.

Animal Studies: and Green tea Research

• A study supplemented a female laboratory mouse with green tea (the percentage was 1% to 4% of its diet) for at least 4 months to determine the effect it may have on appetite of the mouse and its weight. At the end of 4 month’s study, researchers realized that the mouse which was supplemented with green tea content had markedly decreased intake of food, weight gainFeature Articles, and fat.
