Understanding Why Men Get High Levels of Estrogen

Is it possible for a man to have a female characteristics?  The answer is yes, it is.  Why? Because of the presence of a hormone called estrogen.  This is basically a type of hormone that the female specie produces.

Actually, all of male species have estrogen. Their bodies have a controlling system that regulates the amount of estrogen that is being produced.  But there is always an anomaly in our body that makes our estrogen levels rise up to higher levels.

How does this happen? Well here are some causes that could be happening to some of us right now...

Increased Body Fat

There is an enzyme in our body fat called aromatase. It converts a man's testosterone into estrogen. If the person had high levels of body fat... Then  aromatase is more active in converting his testosterone into unwanted estrogen.

The Aging Process

As we grow older, our body produces much lower levels of testosterone. There is a relationship between low testosterone levels, obesity, and elevated estrogen.  The relationship is called Hypogonadal-obesity cycle. In this cycle, low testosterone level leads to an increase in abdominal fat. This leads to increased aromatase activity, which can lead to further conversion of testosterone to estrogen. This further reduces the testosterone levels and increase the tendency toward abdominal fats and symptoms of male menopause, or Andropause.

Environmental Estrogen

Certain chemicals in our environment also contributes to our estrogen levels. These are:

- Bisphenol which can be found in hard plastics,
- Nonylphenol which can be found in cleaning agents
- Benzophenones which can be found sunblocks, cosmetics, soaps, perfumes and colognes.

Estrogenic Foods
