RAW FISH

Main Omega-3s source is fresh raw fish: cod, salmon, sardines, mackerel, tuna.

Or would you just take fish oil, like in cod liver oil?

Fish oil could be taken in pills.

  • A Thailandese study found that knee osteoarthritis patients taking a daily 1,000 mg intake of fish oil supplements for 8 weeks, found their pain decreased and their functioning improved significantly.
  • A British study found that 86% arthritis patients who took cod liver oil had a lot fewer cartilage-damaging enzymes (plus, far fewer pain-causing enzymes) compared to the placebo patrons.
  • Recommended fish oil suplements include EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), as this combination has been extensively studied for many inflammatory conditions.

How Omega-3s works: blocking inflammatory cytokines and prostaglandins, also inducing conversion into anti-inflammatory resolvins.

RAW GRAINS SEED

Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) is found in the seeds of certain plants such as evening primrose, borage and black currants.

You can also buy the oils of the seeds as a supplement.

  • In one trial, 56 patients with active RA showed significant improvement in joint pain, stiffness and grip strength after six months and progressive improvement in control of disease activity at one year.
  • A smaller study found that a combination of GLA and fish oil significantly reduced the need for conventional pain relievers.

How GLA works: The body converts into anti-inflammatory chemicals.
