Just What Is a Walk In Clinic?

Most people have heard of a walk in clinic. But not everyone is sure of exactly what these healthcare providers offer that traditional hospitals do not.

A walk in clinic can usually help people with minor illnesses or illnesses that are not very complicated. A walk in clinic is usually located near places like retail stores, supermarkets, and pharmacies. Nurse practitioners and physician's assistants are usually the people that work at a walk in clinic, though physicians are around as well.

Right now there are about 1,350 of these institutions throughout the United States. A walk in clinic is usually open seven days a week and about twelve hours on the weekdays and only about eight hours on the weekends. Not many people go to these institutions because they are relatively new.

It is predicted that these kinds of health care practices will grow in number over the years. In a survey of health care consumers, it was found that people are interested in and would like to see more of these places. Because the demand is there, there is a potential for success in the future if more of these places would open up to serve the public. The survey concluded that these places of health care would be popular with those who are in better than average health, those who do not trust hospitals and doctors, and those people who are likely to be suspicious of the medications that doctors and hospitals prescribe to them.

Also, the survey showed that more than one in three people who were surveyed were open to the idea of this kind of health care institution. It also showed that one in six people have already used this kind of place, and that interest in this institution was high among the baby boomer population with almost thirty-eight percent of them saying that they would use this kind of place. Millennials are the most likely generation to use this place; seniors are the least likely,

Another major factor in the use of this kind of healthcare institution is cost. A walk in clinic costs much less than a regular doctor's office, an urgent care facility, and a hospital. For instance, the cost of diagnosing an earache in this kind of institution would be about fifty-nine dollars. Whereas the same procedure would cost about ninety-five dollars at a doctor's office, one hundred and thirty-five dollars at an urgent care facility, and about one hundred and eighty-four dollars in an emergency room.

Often these facilities will treat adults and children over the age of eighteen months. They will treat common illnesses like the cold and flu, sinus infections, allergies, minor injuries, etc. They can also provide preventative care such as health screenings, vaccinations, and physical exams. They can even collect urine, blood, and feces samples to the send out to labs to have them tested. Because of the settingArticle Submission, they offer a much smaller and narrower range of treatments than doctor's offices or hospitals.
