First off it is not intended for the obese patient although you would probably assume this is the ideal patient that liposuction is intended for. Although obesity is rapidly becoming a national health concern as more and more Americans become overweight and eventually obese due to poor eating habits and a lack of proper exercise, liposuction is not the miracle cure it may be perceive to be for the obese patient. Studies have found that obese people who undergo liposuction are not pleased with the limited results that liposuction can deliver for them and they have more post op problems than other groups. Liposuction cannot be used to remove more than 8-10 pounds of fatty cell deposits in one surgery. So for a patient who is obese this minor loss won’t make much of an impact and it is not realistic to plan on having liposuction every day until the fat is gone. Another misconception about liposuction is that it isn’t for someone who would be considered thin by most standards. Women and men who have lost weight may find those last ten flabby pounds on their belly , thighs and arms just doesn’t go away and they are the perfect candidates to see positive results with liposuction. Having surgery to remove those extra ten pounds of fat may be the only way to effectively lose the weight. Some people put off having liposuction even if they are an ideal candidate because they are under the misconception that it will require a hospital stay and a long recovery time. In reality this type of surgery is generally done on an outpatient basis so there is no overnight hospital stay required unless there are health complications. In fact most cosmetic surgeons have their own surgical centers in their practice so there is no need to go the hospital at all. And the recovery time is usually fairly brief- no longer than a week or less depending on how much fat was removed and how many areas were treated. The incision area may be bruised or swollen but generally the overall discomfort level can be treated with pain medication and patients are usually allowed to resume their normal lives fairly quickly. If you are considering having liposuction talk to your cosmetic surgeon and find out if you are a good candidate for this type of surgery and get the answers you need to make the best decision based on facts and not misconceptions.
