Your diet is now a very important part of your life even more so living with diabetes.  You now have to watch what you are eating to help control your diabetes and for some this can be very difficult.  There are plenty of forums online to help you make the right choices and to help you understand the foods and their contribution to your diabetes.  You will want to use your food groups pyramid when choosing the correct foods in your diet.

Because you are person with diabetes and you need to maintain a healthy sugar level you most likely will need to eat about 6 small meals a day instead of the typical 3 meals a day.  Did you know that there are some vegetables that you need to be careful with such as corn? You would not think that it would have an effect on your diabetes when in fact it does because once your body digests the corn it breaks the nutrients down and turns into sugar.  Most of us already know that potatoes are very starchy and any food that has starch in it breaks down in your system and turns in to sugar.

This is where you need to pay attention and learn about your foods because what we think is good for us may not be because of what it turns into after we digest it.  Vegetables such as corn,Living with your Diabetes and Diet Articles peas, potatoes and beans should be moved in with grains because they are considered as starchy vegetables unlike carrots, bell peppers, celery and your basic salad vegetables.  They break down in to sugar once you digest them in your system.  One of the big things you need to pay attention to is your carbohydrate intake.

Carbohydrates act as sugar as well so this is important that you read your labels, one carbohydrate choice equals fifteen grams of carbohydrates in a serving.  So if your label says that the carbohydrate is a total of twenty seven grams you will count that as two choices.  When it comes to your meats you don't want your serving to be any bigger than the palm of your hand or a deck of cards.  This represents a serving of three ounces before the meat is cooked.  Your food should always be measured before it is cooked, especially your meat.  Always choose the leaner meat and if you have meat with fat on it you will want to trim that down as much as you can to make it leaner.

Stick with low fat foods when choosing your meal plans.  There are other things to watch out for other than sugar in your foods and those things are sodium intake, watching your cholesterol, not eating too much artificial sweeteners and making sure you are getting enough fiber in your diet as well.  You will want to remember that if you like to drink alcohol that it is high in calories and calories are something that you need to watch.  Most of your wines are high in sugar and all alcohol is full of empty calories. Educate yourself about foods and read the labels to stay healthy.
