The term diagnostic criteria designate from a combination of signs, symptoms, and test results that clinicians use in attempting to reach or determine the correct diagnosis. The plural of diagnosis is diagnoses, the verb is to diagnose, and a person who diagnoses is called a diagnostician.
The word diagnosis is derived through Latin from the Greek word diagignoskein meaning to discern or distinguish. In order to diagnose a patient, Doctors and physicians use a vast array of Instruments, i.e. ENT instruments and other medical machinery such as ECG machines, Ultrasound and X-ray Imaging equipment at their disposal. Depending on the circumstances, the scope of diagnosis can be classified into two areas, mainly Primary Care often carried out by GPs and Secondary Care often carried out in Hospitals. The procedure may involve both Invasive and non Invasive techniques. The Medical tests commonly performed are measuring of the blood pressure, checking the pulse rate, listening to the heartbeat with a stethoscope, urine tests, fecal tests, saliva tests, blood tests, medical imaging, electrocardiogram, hydrogen breath test and occasionally biopsy.
Diagnosis in medical practice
Each medical Professional or GP medical practice is required to implement and be in possession of a range of healthcare essentials and equipment to enable a dedicated high quality diagnosis services to the community. As a healthcare service provider, it is their job is to know the human body and its functions in terms of normality (homeostasis), the four cornerstones of diagnostic medicine, essentially understanding homeostasis;
(a) Anatomy (the structure of the human body),
(b) Physiology (how the body works),
(c) Pathology (what can go wrong with the anatomy and physiology) and
(d) Psychology (thought and behavior).
Once a medical practitioner is able to determine what is normal and abnormal and can measure the patient's current condition against these norms, the medical practitioner can then determine the patient's particular departure from homeostasis and the degree of variance. This is called the diagnosis. Once a diagnosis has been reached, the provider is able to propose a management plan, which will include treatment as well as plans for a follow-up. From this point onwards, in addition to treating the patient's condition, the healthcare provider is able to educate the patient about the symptoms, causes, progression, outcomes, and possible treatment of the ailments, as well as providing advice for maintaining a healthy life.
