Medical Tests Needed for Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that increases the size of the female breasts and reshapes them to make them larger. It can also be used to correct asymmetry of the chest and also to correct ptosis, which is the drooping or sagging of the bosom. 

Laboratory work is a prerequisite of having augmentation on your chest area. The surgeon who will be performing your operation will give you a list of preoperative instructions. These instructions are for your safety and well-being so make sure you follow everything that you are told to do! The instructions will list all of the requisite testing that you must have done. 

Generally speaking, you will be required to have a complete blood count (CBC) to begin with. This is a kind of test that is used to screen your blood. It measures your red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. This kind of test can reveal any number of health issues. If you are anemic which means that there is not enough of the mineral iron in your blood then it can determine this. If you have any problems in regards to the clotting of your blood it can also show that. You may be asked to fast for at least eight hours or more before the blood test is done in order for your blood sugar levels to be assessed. All you will be allowed to consume during the hours preceding the test is water. 

It is also possible that before your breast augmentation surgery can be scheduled you will be required to get a breast X-ray, a baseline mammogram or both. Having these medical tests is a way to rule out the chance that you have breast cancer or any injury to the breast. 

Finally, a full physical examination will be required of you before you can be given a clean bill of health to book your surgical procedure. While you may groan at the thought of all of these tests they are done for your own good. There are risks and possible complications connected to having breast augmentation which is why the surgeon needs the assurance that you are healthy enough to undergo the procedure. 

All of these tests together are necessary as the risks to your health and your life are tremendous if you have implant surgery without being at a healthy enough level to cope with the stress it puts on your body.
