In fact, this alga thrives in household wastewater, especially in rural communities.  Cases of infection from these sources have been seen in deer, dogs, cats and cattle. What does this mean for you? Infection

Infection from this fatal algae happens when the organism gets into a cut or open sore on your body. The most common places for this to occur are on your arms, legs, feet and face. When the algae enter the open wound, it causes an ulceration of the skin. This type of infection can take quite some time to fully mature, up to two weeks or longer.

In serious cases this fatal algae can cause what is called septicemia, which is a fancy way of saying you have microbes in your blood, or meningitis, which is an infection of the spinal cord or brain covering.
