Around the world, plastic surgery is becoming more popular than ever. Techniques are advancing and technology is accelerating to the point where nearly any cosmetic improvement can be had with the aid of a surgeon’s scalpel. As procedures grow more refined, the results are more pleasing to the eye than in years past, in turn leading more people to consider taking the plunge. People choose to get cosmetic enhancement for a variety of reasons, none of which are objectively wrong. If you are thinking of having something done, here are the answers to some questions you might have.

Will my insurance cover it?
For the most part, plastic surgery falls under the realm of elective surgery, and thus will not be covered by most insurance companies. There are, of course, exceptions to this rule. For instance, if you need reconstructive surgery following an accident, disease, or for the purpose of correcting a congenital deformity, insurance will likely cover at least part of the cost. Along the same lines, if you can prove you are getting the procedure to correct a health problem (i.e. rhinoplasty to correct problems breathing), it will also probably be covered.

Is it dangerous to get silicone implants?
The simple answer is no. There are risks, of course, with any kind of plastic surgery, but there is very little medical literature that points to any specific danger coming from today’s silicone implants. Having said that, there are certain restrictions on who is qualified to have these implants, so you may need to go the saline route if you do not meet these restrictions. The best idea is to talk with your surgeon about your options.

Is there any such thing as a non-surgical face lift?
Not really. There will always be cosmetic products that advertise themselves as such, but a face lift as it is known in medical circles can only be achieved with plastic surgery. Having said that, many patients think they need a face lift, when another procedure or product may be better to achieve their goals. Botox, chemical peels, collagen injections and more can all be used to reach different results.
