Rhinoplasty: Have an Idea of Whether You Are a Good Candidate

If you want a change in your nose's size, shape, or positioning, it might be time for rhinoplasty. However, not everyone is considered a good candidate for this surgery, so get some idea of whether you are before you visit with a doctor.

If you are considering a major change in your look, rhinoplasty could give you what you seek. This procedure is great for when you want to change your nose in some way, whether you are unhappy with the shape, size, or positioning. Believe it or not, experienced doctors can alter any of those issues. Before you start planning on getting this treatment, make sure you would be considered a good candidate. 

Most people who opt for rhinoplasty simply do not like the way their nose is. Perhaps they have not liked it since birth and are just now realizing they can change it with surgery, or maybe they had some accident that changed the look of it. If either description sounds familiar to you, it might be time to schedule an initial consultation with a doctor to find out if this treatment is best for you. 

In most cases, if you want to change the appearance of your nose and you have realistic expectations, you can get the operation done. However, if you believe the change will change your entire life for the better, or simply want it done to get someone else's attention, most doctors will not do the surgery. This is because you will be disappointed if you think that rhinoplasty will do much more than alter your facial appearance for the better. 

In addition, your surgeon will request a medical history from you before you can get rhinoplasty done. You should be in generally good health in order to be eligible for this surgery, so if you are not, most surgeons will deny you the operation for safety reasons. Additionally, you cannot be on certain medications since they can affect how you heal. One example of this is blood thinners, but there are plenty of other medications that may have a negative effect on your healing time. Ask your primary care doctor if you can safely temporarily stop taking the medication in question if it will affect your recovery period, or try to switch to a different one when possible. 

In general, you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you want to change something about your nose and are in generally good health. Just know that revealing some unrealistic expectations to your surgeon could prevent you from getting the operation. Consider these tips before you attend a consultation so that you are aware of whether you will likely be thought of as a good candidate.
