Saline or Silicone? Which One Is Best For You?If you have already made the decision to have breast augmentation
surgery your next big decision will to decide what type of breast
implants to use. Your two choices include saline or silicone implants.
Read on to learn more. Saline implants are filled after the surgeon inserts them into your breast so the incision will be smaller than the incision to insert the pre filled silicone implants. Although your incision will be strategically placed and will usually fade over time to be less noticeable, scaring size can be a consideration factor for many women in this choice of implant types. Other factors to consider include the chance of a breast implant rupture. If a saline implant ruptures inside your breast the results will be immediately noticeable and you can take corrective action to have the implant removed and replaced. Plus the saline will be absorbed naturally in your body so there is no health concerns regarding the introduction of the implant material into our body. Silicone implants however can rupture and the results may not be immediately noticeable. Silicone ruptures are often called the silent rupture because of the fact that the silicone gel material doesn’t get absorbed into your body after a rupture and instead tends to stay near the implant. The FDA does in fact recommend that women who choose silicone implants have a MRI done three years post op to check for a rupture and then every two years after that. If your implant has ruptured, it has to be removed. MRI’s can be quite costly if not covered by insurance and this should be factored into your decision. Although the FDA’s recommendation is not enforceable, it is the most effective method to ensure your implants are not leaking and creating any health risk for you down the road. Saline breast implants do have the disadvantage of showing ripples through the skin which is one of the reasons they are generally implanted under the muscle. This placement also factors into a higher cost compared to silicone of about one thousand dollars. Saline implants also have an unnatural feel that has been compared to water balloons. While silicone implants have the advantage of a semi solid and more natural feel. Since they are also less inclined to show rippling through the skin , they are a better fit for women who are small
breasted and have less breast tissue to conceal an implant in. Be sure to research both options and discuss your post operative goals with your doctor so you can make a decision regarding you breast implants that will work for you over the long run.
