Tendonitis Treatment – all you need to know

Tendons are cords of tough, fibrous connective tissue that connects muscles to the bones. Tendons exist throughout the entire human body. When these tendons gets inflamed and / or cause irritation, the disease is called tendonitis. Tendonitis, if detected in early phase of its occurrence, can be easily treated and cured.

Tendonitis treatment is the process of resting and reshaping the affected area.

Some of the types of tendonitis that are seen most frequently are:

  • Wrist Tendonitis - It is a common problem that causes pain and swelling around the wrist. Wrist tendonitis happens due to inflammation of the tendon sheath. It has several medicinal cures and does not require surgery always.
  • Achilles Tendonitis - This causes severe pain and swelling in the back of the heel. This is a common problem and merely understanding this aspect can help with treatment and help avoid further serious complications such as Achilles tendon rupture
  • Posterior Tibial Tendonitis - Occurring in the area near Achilles tendonitis, posterior Tibial tendonitis is rare but still can be found in many. The symptoms surface on the inner side of the ankle. If left untreated, posterior tibial tendonitis can result in a flat foot.
  • Patellar (Kneecap) Tendonitis – It is inflammation of the patellar tendon and the treatment usually consists of rest and anti-inflammatory medication
  • Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis) – It is kind of tendonitis that causes severe pain on the outer portion of the elbow. It is usually seen among tennis players.

Once the diagnosis for tendonitis treatmentis done with, the next step is to proceed with appropriate treatment. Treatment to be done will depend on the specific type of tendonitis. Few treatment methods can be listed as follows:

  • Give rest to the affected area – immediate steps must be taken to give rest to the affected area so as not to aggravate the injury.
  • Apply an ice pack – this is though a temporary solution only. Icing controls the inflammation and reduces the swelling. This allows the tendons to return to its original form
  • Take anti – inflammatory medicines – these medicines can help reduce the pain associated with the swelling
  • Cortisone injections – if the pains are consistent, then cortisone injections are given. These injections are high powered localized anti-inflammatory ones
  • Therapeutic ultrasound treatment.

  • Strengthening and physical therapy
  • Take breaks
  • Protect the tendons while doing certain activities that might affect it
