The History of Ayurveda

Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine is a concept of traditional medicine related to Indian subcontinent. It is practiced all across the world in the form of alternative medicine. In Sanskrit, the word Ayurveda consists of words ayus, means “longevity”, and veda meaning “related to knowledge: or “science”.

 The Ayurveda history is related to earliest literature on Indian medical practice evolved during the Vedic period in India. The Susruta Samhita and the Charaka Samhita were significant works on conventional medicine during this period.  Over the following centuries, Ayurvedic practitioners researched a number of medicinal preparations and surgical procedures for the treatment of various ailments and diseases.

Around 1500 BC, ayurveda’s fundamental and applied principles got organized and articulated. Ayurveda history traces its origin to the Vedas, Atharvaveda in specific, is related to Hindu religion. Atharvaveda contain 114 formulations for the treatment of diseases. The origination of Ayurveda is very much related to these formulations and considered by some to have divine origin. There is a long history of Indian medicine and is one of the oldest organized systems of medicine. Its earlier concepts are set out in the divine writings called the Vedas, specifically in the metrical passages of the Atharvaveda.

Another side of Ayurveda history includes the previous works of Ayurveda include the Charaka Samhita, related to Charaka. The earliest surviving excavated written material which contains the work of Sushruta is the Bower manuscript, dated to the 4th century. The Bower manuscript quotes directly from Sushruta and is of significant interest to historians due to the presence of Indian medicine and its thoughts in Central Asia. Vagbhata, the son of a senior doctor by the name of Simhagupta, also created his works on traditional medicine. Previously Ayurveda has a school of physicians and a school of surgeons. The Ayurveda history holds that the text Agnivesh tantra, written by the sage Agnivesh, a student of the sage Bhardwaja, influenced the writings of Ayurveda.
