What our culture defines as beauty is often mirrored in both fashion and in cosmetic surgery procedures. For example,The Role of Plastic Surgery in Society Articles American culture in the1920's considered a woman with a flat chest and boyish build very attractive. Fashion dictated a high neckline that took away from any bust line, which helped to introduce the "flapper" look. Today quite the opposite is true. Blouses, t-shirts and dresses generally are cut to expose cleavage and for those who are not blessed with enough cleavage to expose, there is always the option of plastic surgery to help compensate. Breast augmentation surgery is the most popular form of plastic surgery and it has held this position for many years now with no signs of waning. And while it may be a running joke for a woman to ask if a particular outfit makes her butt look big, the truth is that big butts are in fashion for some ethnic groups. The love for big butts has made its way into the lyrics of mainstream popular songs. And butt implants, although not on the top five of cosmetic procedures list, have gained in popularity in recent years. Butt implants, similar to breast implants are one form of plastic surgery that can enhance a flat hinny and give a woman's body more natural curves. Our culture also defines beauty by age. There are certain expectations for how a particular woman should look and the older she gets the harder it may be for those physical attributes to be maintained without some form of plastic surgery. Let's face it; we are a culture that embraces youth. Music, television, clothing and even our language are influenced by a young culture. For those who are not chronologically young anymore, the battle to maintain a youthful appearance almost dictates the need for cosmetic surgery to feel a part of the mainstream culture. Women can choose from a wide array of cosmetic procedures that can stave off the subtle signs of aging such as wrinkles and saggy breasts, saggy facial muscles, under eye bags and other indicators that our chronological age is on the fast track and it's not being kind. Botox injections can erase fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. Face-lifts can take the sag out of an aging face and collagen injections fill in lines and wrinkles to make a woman appear younger again. And in the end, why shouldn't we embrace cosmetic surgery. This type of surgery makes women happier with their bodies, increases their self-confidence and lets them look as good on the outside as they feel inside. Chronological age is just a number and woman shouldn't be bond to any number that doesn't match what she feels like on the inside.
