Understanding The Health Insurance Plan You Have Is A Pretty Big Deal
Health insurance with a job is one of the better perks to have. Oftentimes though you get the insurance without understanding the type that you have. There are a few out there and they are radically different in their approach to what costs you extra among other things. Before settling in and going to the doctor for a checkup look at what you have so you understand what you are paying for.
Some companies prefer an indemnity plan. That means that you pay for a percentage of whatever it costs you to go to the doctor. This can get pretty expensive if you need some serious help such as cancer issues or heart issues. The plus of having this plan is that it is very liberal about who you decide to use as a health care provider. There has been a lot of switching to the less expensive PPO and HMO plans though because of the issue of cost.
HMO plans are very common and are what most people end up with when they get insurance as a job benefit. When you have this plan you will have one regular doctor that you pick from the list of providers. This is the person that you will see no matter what you have going on, except for emergencies. If you don't go to this doctor before a specialist you will be paying more.
A preferred provider organization has a greater list of doctors that you can see whenever you want. This is why it is popular with many people. Now before you jump on a PPO plan, it is important to see what providers that they have for you to choose from. Don't assume that the specialist you need will be one of them. You can look over a list before making any final decision. If you end up needing or wanting to see someone that is not on the list it will cost you.
Understand that your insurance company and employer may not tell you that you are in a PPO or HMO but usually you can find this information on your health insurance card. If you find that you are in one of these plans then it is important to choose your providers carefully from their list to receive the best deal on your health care.
