Understanding the Options in Breast Implants

There is different types of breast implants in terms of what they are made of. There are also different types of surfaces and shapes. Here we look at the options that you must choose from before you pencil in augmentation surgery on your calendar.

Computer Technology ArticlesYou have decided that you want to get breast implants. You are excited about the prospect and the changes it will bring about for your body. What you must acquaint yourself with is the fact that not all implants are made the same. There are silicone gel-filled breast implants as well as saline filled ones. They also come in different surfaces and shapes. Let us take a look at the different options that you must pick from before your surgery date arrives.

First we will look at the two types of implants used in augmentation surgery. Silicone or silicone gel-filled implants are pre-filled with a kind of silicone that is sticky and thick in its consistency. They are filled before they are placed into the patient’s chest.

Saline filled implants on the other hand are made up of sterile salt water. Unlike their silicone counterparts they are not filled with saline until they have been inserted in the body.

Both silicone and saline implants have their positive and negative aspects. Many patients feel that the silicone material lends itself to a more natural appearance and feel for the individual. In trying to decide which type you should choose ask the cosmetic surgeon to explain them both to you in further detail.

There are two kinds of surfaces when it comes to breast implants. There is smooth and textured. This is something you must know before you schedule your augmentation surgery. The smooth surface means that it is smoothly textured and will resemble a balloon’s surface. Smooth implants are the most common and popular choice for most women today.

There are also textured implants. These are rough in nature. If you can imagine the feel of sandpaper then you will understand the surface of textured implants. This surface type was developed because it was believed that it reduced the concern over capsular contracture from taking place. This has yet to be proven for a fact.

Shape is something else that all cosmetic surgery candidates looking to have work done on their breasts must make a decision about. There are round implants and teardrop implants. It may sound funny but the round shaped ones resemble the look of jelly doughnuts. Think of a jelly doughnut and that will help you to visualize the appearance of a round shaped implant. The round ones are used the most often.

The teardrop shape was created because it mimicked the natural shape of a woman’s breast. The problem with this shape is that as time goes by the teardrop shape becomes more rounded and has the tendency to rotate and move around in the chest. For this reason plastic surgeons tends to prefer using the round shapes for their patients as opposed to the teardrop shapes. It is also important to point out that the teardrop breast implants are only available in the textured surface and not the smooth surface.

Discuss the options at your disposal with the doctor who will be performing your surgical procedure for you. Make sure that you understand everything implicitly before you start to make decisions about your upcoming augmentation.
