Urgent Care: What To Look for in a Good Location

When you are sick or injured, it is not always possible to wait a few days to see your doctor, so you might need to go to urgent care. However, you still want quality medical treatment despite not seeing your typical physician. Consider a few traits of the best urgent care locations available.

Clinics that accept walk-ins are quite helpful since the entire point is to not have to wait for an appointment with your physician. Of course, you are also trying to avoid going to the emergency room at the hospital, which is usually filled with tons of people at all hours. Most urgent care clinics do not have as varied hours as the emergency room, which is always open.

However, they are usually open at least a few hours before and after the typical doctor's office, and they are also open on weekends. In some cases, you can make an appointment, such as if you need a quick service, like a flu shot. You may also have to go to this type of office simply because your doctor is on vacation, in which case you might opt to make an appointment when possible. Otherwise, the employees at this type of location know that it is not always reasonable to require appointments since you never know when you will get hurt or seriously ill.

Just because you are suddenly sick or injured does not mean you have to settle for low quality medical treatment. Look up reviews on the doctors before you choose which clinic to visit. Some have consistently better treatment than others, at least according to patient reviews. They often review the time spent in the waiting room, time spent with the physician, and the overall attitude of the doctor. Consider all these aspects before you choose which place to get treated at.

One of the major worries when you get hurt or sick is how you will pay. Fortunately, most urgent care clinics accept credit and debit cards so you do not have to have cash on hand. They also tend to take most types of insurance, but call ahead to find out for sure whether yours is accepted since you will be expected to pay upfront otherwise.

Do not count on them taking personal checks or having a finance plan available like some doctors' offices do. This type of clinic does not usually operate the same way since the doctors here see many patients who will never be back. Therefore, you cannot simply be billed later since they may never see you again, and have no way of knowing if you have provided your current address. The best way to be prepared is to ensure they take your insurance plan, and have a credit card with you just in case.

If you do not have an illness or injury that needs to be treated the same day, you are advised to see your regular physician. If you have an emergency that has to be treated immediately, on the other hand, go to an emergency room. All other cases are typically best left to urgent care centers.
