India is a developing nation and is working hard to grow itself towards becoming a powerful country. Apart from political and economic issues, there are some other concerns that are hampering its growth process. Poor health of the citizens is amongst them. There are places which is abundant in water supply while there are some other places which are deprived of clean potable water. Both these situations lead to water borne diseases which are caused due to contamination of water and poor sanitation and unhygienic conditions. The death toll caused by water borne diseases is widely spread in rural as well as urban areas.

Below mentioned is a list of major water borne diseases which are affecting the health of not just adults but children as well.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea is caused majorly due to eating contaminated food or by drinking contaminated water. Chronic diarrhea can also lead to rapid dehydration, metabolic disturbances and a damaged gut. Prevention of diarrhea can be done through a cleaner environment with access to safe and clean drinking water. Getting a water purifier installed at domestic as well as commercial places is one way to ensure safe drinking water to people around us.

Cholera

Cholera is caused by the fecal of bacteria Vibrio Cholerae which is commonly found in contaminated food and water. Since it is a waterborne disease, safe water and sanitation is crucial to prevent it from spreading its wings. Malaria

Malaria is caused by biting of mosquitoes which are infected by plasmodium parasite. Mosquitoes are majorly found in areas with stagnant water or places where clean water is unavailable. According to a study published in The Lancet in Feb 2012, the estimated malaria mortality rate in India was 46,800 in 2010. It is recommended that young children and pregnant woman should avoid travelling to areas where malaria is common.

Typhoid

Typhoid is a type of fever caused by attack of Salmonella typhi or Salmonella paratyphi bacteria. This bacterium is present in contaminated food or water. Improvement in sanitation and water systems are the ultimate solutions to control this disease.

 Rota Virus

It is the most common cause of severe diarrhea and majorly infants and children are attacked by it. It causes death of 500,000 children each year worldwide. Children of age between 6 months to 24 months are at greatest risk of being attacked by this disease. It is caused due to bad sanitation and poor water systems.

Filariasis

It is a disease caused by infection with roundworms, parasitic nematodes. It breeds preferably in dirty and polluted water. According to W.H.O., India, Indonesia, Nigeria and Bangladesh alone contribute to 70% of the infection worldwide.
