What Can an Urgent Care Facility Offer You?

Twenty years ago, the term "urgent care" would have been little more than a synonym for the Emergency Room. Today, it represents a growing number of clinics designed to act as an alternative to the ER in many ways. While there are no substitutes for hospital care in some instances, there are many other situations in which these clinics make the perfect choice for patients who don't want to spend all day in a waiting room. They also make a nice alternative to waiting for a doctor's appointment, which can take weeks. Here are some of the things such a clinic can offer you.

A Timely Alternative

As you surely already know, making an appointment with a physician can take weeks. If you have a doctor who is extremely sought after and busy, it could take even longer than that. If you are suffering from a cold or a broken wrist, it hardly makes sense to wait that long until you get treatment. For most people, this means going to the emergency room. But if you go to the ER with an ailment that isn't life threatening, you are going to find yourself not only waiting behind those who were already there, but also behind those that come in later with more serious ailments. An urgent care facility works as a timely alternative to both of these extremes.

Appropriate Instances

Every urgent care facility is different, so you should check with your local clinic to see exactly what kinds of treatments they offer and when it is appropriate to visit in lieu of your regular doctor or the ER. Generally speaking, minor ailments and injuries such as a cold, flu, lacerations, sprains, minor broken bones (such as the hand or wrist), and things that are too urgent to wait on and yet not really serious enough for a trip to the ER fall perfectly into the scope of such a clinic. If you aren't sure if the ailment or injury you're suffering from is appropriate for the clinic, give them a call and listen to their advice.

Cost

If the urgent care facility near you is in your insurance plan, you will almost certainly pay less for the privilege of being treated there than you would, had you gone to the hospital. Now, this is no reason to take a chance on a clinic when the ER would be more appropriateArticle Submission, but it is something to consider if the only reason you're leaning towards the ER is familiarity.
