During the cold month of February,5 Unique Valentine Gift Ideas for the Gardener Articles the gardeners among us long for warm spring temperatures.  If your Valentine is among those who love the outdoors, why not try a different type of gift this year?  Instead of the same old boring flowers or chocolate, we've got five unique Valentine's Day gift ideas that are inspired by the garden and outdoors.

Idea #1 – An Arbor or Pergola
An arbor or a pergola is an easy way to add architectural detail to your yard, plus it provides an excellent support structure for climbing plants and vines in the garden.  An arbor or pergola kit is a great gift idea for anyone who loves spending time in their yard, and assembling the kit will be a fun DIY project for early spring.

Idea #2 – A Greenhouse
Many people think a greenhouse wouldn't make a good surprise gift.  While this may be true in the case of large outdoor greenhouses, there are other options.  For the hobby gardener, consider a portable or temporary use greenhouse that can be used on a deck or patio as needed and then stored during the off season.  An indoor greenhouse kit is another great gift idea, because it allows the vegetable gardener to get a head start by planting their seeds indoors long before the weather has warmed up outside.

Idea #3 – A Compost Bin
While a compost bin may not seem like a very romantic Valentine's gift, for a gardener, it's love at first sight.  Yard waste and food scraps can be put into a compost bin to produce rich, black compost, one of the most fertile substances on earth.  When applied to shrubs and trees or tilled into garden soil, plants will grow faster, taller and fuller than you ever imagined.

Idea #4 – A Patio Trellis
Patio trellises, also sometimes referred to as outdoor privacy screens, are a wonderful gift for the gardener who's limited on space.  Look for a patio trellis with a self-contained base, meaning that it can be moved around as needed.  If the trellis features a planter base, you can even plant a climbing plant or flowering vine that will trail up the trellis.  Patio trellises make an ideal gift for apartment dwellers who are limited to a small patio, deck, or balcony.

Idea #5 – Plants
If you don't think your Valentine needs any of the aforementioned gifts, consider a gift certificate for something every gardener loves: plants!  If you know of a local nursery where your loved one likes to purchase their seedlings and flowers in the spring, this is a great choice.  If you're not sure of a local garden center he or she likes, then choose a reputable mail order seed company and wrap up a catalog along with a gift card.

No matter which of these gifts you choose, your Valentine is sure to be pleased and also impressed by your thoughtfulness.  After all, gifts like chocolate or flowers can be given to anyone by anyone, but a garden-inspired gift for a gardener shows that you really put some thought into the gift you're giving.  Happy Valentine's Day!
