It takes three things to start a fire: - oxygen, heat and fuel.

Fuel: - It is a part of fire which is actually the dangerous one as compared to the other sources of fire.

Heat: - It is the part of fire which is responsible for exacerbating the condition of fire.

Oxygen: - It is the part of fire which is very much essential for the combustion of the fire material. Without the supply of oxygen the combustion can not take place and the occurrence of fire is impossible in its absence.

Safety measures should be taken to avoid as well as reduce the threats of fire. Buildings should be designed in such a manner that it satisfies all the required fire safety rules as well as regulations.

Some basic points about fire safety that are to be kept in mind are:

•    Proper fire exits and exit signs in case of any emergency should be available.
•    Fire extinguishers of appropriate type should be placed on a readily accessible place and should be maintained accordingly.
•    Keeping out the use of flammable substances in those areas of the buildings which is likely to cause a fire hazard.
•    Proper fire alarm systems and fire detection systems should be installed and maintained.
•    Proper fire safety and awareness program among the occupants is necessary. The occupants should have proper knowledge about the location and usage of the fire extinguisher as well as about the emergency exit gates.
Some very common hazards of fire are inappropriate use and maintenance of gas stoves, improper installation of electrical wiring, inappropriate use of electrical appliances.
