Knowing a few facts about platform beds is in order, especially when considering going out and purchasing one of these very nice beds. They have a generally long and distinguished history, though they weren't always known as the kind of bed they're called today. Back then, they were better known as "loft beds, " and they filled a very specific role in the household.

In those days,Learning A Little About Platform Beds Articles a typical loft bed was situated high off the ground in order to give more living space to the room below the bed. In the days when a commoner or a person of limited means could only afford a very small living space, having a bed that could be elevated some distance up off the ground came in very handy. Gradually, they were lowered down almost to the ground to where they are today.

Many of these beds come in a wide variety of materials, though most are often made of metal or wood, not only in their platform but also in their frame and even foot boards and headboards. Because there's a platform in the mix, it's possible that a user of the bed will only need a mattress and not a box spring, though one can certainly be added to the bed if needed.

These beds also come in a number of different styles, sizes and varieties though the most common style today is "contemporary." This means that the bed will be fairly neutral or solid in color and will have clean, straight lines. This enables it to match up well in a variety of different living areas. They might also feature footboards and headboards as part of their package.

However, many such beds as these often don't come with a footboard or headboard, so keep that in mind when considering a purchase. There are also a number of so-called "traditional" styles of bed that try to incorporate the idea of a platform into a bed that was made for a more handsomely-aged style such as the Arts and Crafts era or even the early Mission era of furniture design.

These days, it's a rare furniture store that doesn't offer at least a couple of different styles of this bed and in a variety of prices. One has a choice of purchasing something that might actually look retro or more traditional or go for something very low slung and sleek. Expect to pay between $250 and $1500, depending on quality and what kind of materials that the bed will be made of.

The wide variety and styles of platform beds today belie the fact that these beds have a long lineage. They've never really gone out of style at any one time, though they've been very popular at certain points in bed history. They are partly appealing because they require only a mattress and don't need a box spring and also because they can be as sleek and low-slung as one wishes, which is something that appeals to many.
