5 Steps to an Organized Garage

Garage organization is something you need to do. These tips and steps can help you to get the job done.

If garage organization is something you are struggling with, it may be time to make the decision to dive in and get it done. The good news is that this process does not have to be as complex as you may believe, especially when you have a few friends to help and the right tools and gear to make it work. If you dread opening your door, or you close it very quickly to avoid the neighbors peering in, the following steps can help you to get the job done in a very simple manner.

1. First, create a location for each item in your space that you have. It will either go into a pile of keeping, donating or trash. There is no middle ground and each item needs to be put into one of these piles. Work through all of the items in the space, getting rid of as much as you can that you just do not use.

2. The next step in garage organization is to organize that pile of items you plan to keep. To do this, group like items together, such as all tools should go in the same place while all of the kids items need to go into their own area. Do this for all of the items in this space.

3. Consider the benefits of using a pegboard and organizing tools. This includes the use of tool cabinets, if you have them. Any set of storage drawers can be helpful here. It is especially important to tackle this job first if you have children who need to stay away from such items in the home. 4. Shelving is the next step. Every garage can benefit from the use of shelving. You can often find affordable shelving options available to make this easy. Place these throughout the space as you need to and place items on them that do not fit into totes. It is a good idea to label shelving to fit the type of items that will go on it. This is an important part of long-term garage organization.

5. Using totes is also a good idea. You can store everything from shoes to toys in totes. Again, the key to being successful with this process, though, is ensuring that everything receives a label. If it does not, chances are good those totes will become a catch all for everything in the space.
