A messy garage is the American way, correct? Well, sometimes, but it doesn’t have to be. Cleaning the garage can actually improve your life in ways you may not have imagined. Grab some black plastic bags and packing boxes because after reading the list of potential life improvements, you’re going to want to jump right in and begin to clean it up.

- Protect your automobile: Many homeowners have their garages so packed with miscellaneous storage items and gewgaws; they can no longer park their cars inside. The room meant to protect their automobile has become a storage shed. Next to one’s house, the family car is probably the second largest asset that they own. Keeping it out of inclement weather and away from potential theft of valuables inside the car or even the theft of the car itself, is a smart move. Cleaning out and organizing will make space for this room to shelter their prized vehicle.

- Find hidden cash: How many items stored away are actually used on a regular basis or needed? If there are items out there that haven’t been used in a year or so, it’s time to release them. Having a garage sale, putting ads in the local newspaper or online at internet sites will put cash into one’s pocketbook and allow someone else to utilize something that they need and you don’t.

- Save on your taxes: Donate whatever items are stacked up in storage and take the charitable donations off on your taxes. If a person donates to organizations such as Goodwill, Salvation Army or Habitat for Humanity, the organizations will be happy to give receipts to be saved till tax time rolls around again.

- Help others: Even if you don’t sell or donate to a formalized charity, giving to others is a great thing to do. Recycle, reuse, repair and pass on. Follow these green rules and you will be helping the environment and your fellow man. Remember, what goes around comes around. Whatever you do comes back to you.

- Improve your feng shui: Many believe the feng shui cleaning principle that when you clean up a physical part of your environment, your internal environment will be brought into harmony, as well. A dirty, disorganized and piled up mess contained by your garage causes disharmony and stress in your life. Not being able to find things or being confronted by an ugly jungle of junk can make one feel claustrophobic and out of control. Clean up your external space and watch your internal space follow suit.
