Decks - Why You Should Consider One

If you have a wooden deck then to keep it durable and looking its best you need to maintain it properly. Here we look at how you can go about doing that.

Treated wood decks are the way to go if you are looking for a way to enjoy your yard but still be close to the house. Just imagine yourself keeping cool in the summer time while sitting on your strong and sturdy patio! Decks need to be maintained to remain in the best shape possible.

Most decks are crafted from pressure-treated pine. What this means is that pressure was used to force the chemicals into the wood. This provides a measure of protection and safety in terms of insects and rotting from weather exposure. It is worth noting however that this does not mean that pressure-treated wood does not require maintenance because it surely does.

Many factors can affect how long pressure-treated wood will remain in good shape. How often it is tread on makes a difference (including whether you have pets that walk on it) as does the furnishings you keep on it. Mildew and mold play a role in the lifespan of a deck as does the ultraviolet rays of the sun. The rays from the sun can cause the most damage to pressure-treated wood that is outdoors. If you live in an area that gets a lot of heat and sunshine then the wood can become discolored over time.

Pressure-treated wood is vulnerable to damage in that it is not waterproof. If the wood gets wet and has not been properly waterproofed when it was built then the sun will dry it quicker, thus leading to cracks and warps in select areas of it.

The most essential thing you can do to make sure that your porch lasts as long as possible is to make maintenance a top priority. To ensure the longevity of the wood you need to refinish it at the correct time. Some wooden decks will need to be refinished on an annual basis while others will only require refinishing once every few years. The type of finish plays a role in this as does the usage and the exposure (as previously mentioned). When your porch starts to look the worse for wear then it is time to put some time and effort into it.

Before you can refinish it you need to inspect it for any problems, such as cracks, splinters, warps or boards that need to be replaced. Once you have made all of the necessary repairs then you can move ahead with the next step which is refinishing it.

Before you do the refinishing you must give the patio a good cleaning. Be as thorough as you possibly can be. You can use a commercial cleaning product or you can make your own. Once the cleaning is done you can choose to refinish the porch with either a water seal (or waterproofer), a wood protector or for added appeal, you can choose to use a semi-transparent stain. Be aware however that if you choose to use the stain then the maintenance will be much greater than if you went with either of the two other options. You will have to continue to stain in the futureComputer Technology Articles, or else you will have to take the time to strip the stain off. Those are the only two choices in regards to staining.
