Outdoor water fountains have always been a significant part of architecture since ancient times. And apart from their aesthetic contribution, fountains were used to supply drinking water to townsfolk and ensure that wildlife within the vicinity is provided for. In fact, originally, fountains were used purely for hydration, bathing and washing purposes. And until the 19th century, they were mostly run through gravity, with the source of water coming from a higher place and then led through cities by a series of aqueducts and canals. By the time of the Roman occupation, fountains were slowly being used as decorative installations, embellished with bronze and stone masks. And today, that tradition lives on with the indoor and outdoor water fountains available for sale.

They usually come in a variety of sizes and materials. And this determines their prizes as well as durability. But you can always expect them to incorporate a significant improvement in your home’s design. If you are looking to buy water fountains for your patio or garden, then be prepared to sift through the following choices.

a. Urn fountains. These basically are shaped like large water jugs and sometimes, topped with a small tier. They are great to place side by side with prized flower plants or garden stones for that Zen feel. And they usually are made from slate, ceramic and cement and come in a number of earth colors to ensure that seamless outdoor integration.

b. Wall fountains. As the name suggests, they are commonly attached to walls. They can also be used as indoor ornaments. However, they are usually applied as an appendage on one’s deck. They are typically made of durable layered fiberglass, covered with stunning antiquated stone finish. So you do not have to worry about environmental wear and tear.

c. Animal fountains. If you are a nature lover to the core, you’d probably enjoy having fountains shaped in your favorite animals better. Expect the water to spit from the mouth of the statue to an adjacent reservoir. They are usually custom ordered, so they can be expensive. But if you have some made on a smaller scale, you might not have to spend more than what a typical fountain would cost.

d. Contemporary fountains. These are unique, sometimes, oddly shaped decors that take the idea of a garden fountain to a whole new level. They are popular because they directly reflect the homeowner’s personal style. And on top of that, they are sleek and very appropriate for the times.

e. Bubbling fountains. These are probably the simplest and most common of all outdoor water fountain designs given that they are less intimidating to incorporate into a home’s landscape. They don’t spew water; they just let it fizz out on top and create a very relaxing sound. They are made in a number of shapes, often times purposely rocks or pots so they could blend in easily with the surroundings.

Aside from these, there are other types you could check out. Just make sure that you establish a set of criterions before you look around so you’d be able to arrive at the right decision sooner when out to buy water fountains.
