General Introduction and Types of Surveillance

Surveillance is the monitoring of the behavior other changing information and activities of a person often in a secret manner. Mostly it is refers to observation of individuals or groups by government organizations, but disease surveillance is monitoring the progress of a disease in a community.

The word surveillance comes from the French word it means watching over.

This word also can be applied to observation from a distance by an electronic instrument such as CCTV cameras, or phone calls and internet traffic. It can be also refer to simple method as intelligence agents and postal interception.

There are many types of surveillance. Some of them are such as;

Telephones; he unofficial and official tapping of telephone is very common in these days. Mobile phones are also helpful to collect the location data. The geographical location can be easily determined by a mobile phone. Computer Surveillance; There is too much data on the internet for human investigators to manually search through all of it. So automatic internet surveillance computers sift through the vast amount of intercepted internet traffic and identify the report to human investigators traffic considered interesting by using trigger words visiting the sites or chat with suspicious characters or groups.

Computers are also a good target for surveillance because the personal data of anybody can be easily stored on them.

Surveillance cameras; these video cameras are also used for observing an area. Generally they are connected to a recording device. This is an expensive procedure. Now it is simple and cheaper to be used in home security because in these days these cameras are available with cheaper production techniques.  Analysis of footage is now made easier by automated cameras and digital videos. The use of surveillance cameras is increasing by businesses and governments day by day.

Social network; It is a common form of surveillance to create maps of social networks based on data from social networking sites. Many U.S. government agencies are currently investing heavily in research involving network analysis. The threats are easily countered by finding important nodes in the network.
