You don't necessarily need fancy fixtures such as retrofit flush valves and low-flow shower heads to ensure that your children have enough water in the future. You can simply conserve water by using it judiciously. Here are some tips on how you can do so.

Tips to conserve water without spending a penny:

When you wash your clothes and dishes:

1. Reduce the number of times that you use your washing machine. Collect your washing until you have a full load,Go Green With Your Plumbing For Free! Articles and then wash.

2. Do the same for your dishwasher. Washing dishes by hand saves more water as well.

3. Prewashing for automatic dishwashers can be avoided unless it is necessary.

Restroom measures:

1. Place a plastic jug in your flush toilet tank to reduce the amount of water that it uses each time you flush.

2. Throw your trash in the trash bin, and not in the flush toilet. You will be flushing less, which will mean less water usage.

3. Using faucets for rinsing can be wasteful. Either store water in a vessel and use that to rinse or use a hose pipe. Never let the water run while you brush your teeth.

4. It is a good idea to brush your teeth before you shave. This way you will use the cold water to brush while you wait for hot water for shaving.

Fix your leaks

Undetected leaks can cause gallons of water wastage annually. You may never know about them and wonder at your high water bills. You should check regularly for leaks. There is a simple way to find out if there is a leak anywhere in your toilet. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. Wait for about half an hour. If the water in the bowl colors even without flushing, it means you have a leak. A leaky toilet can waste as much as 3000 to 5000 gallons of water in a month.

Other measures:

1. If you want a drink of cold water, and are used to letting the hot water run out for it, stop doing so. Instead,  always have a bottle of water in the refrigerator for such times.

2. For the water that you use for watering your lawn and garden, collecting rainwater from the gutters can be a great way to save this precious resource.
