When you need a project done hiring a handyman could be a good
investment. But how can you be sure that you are finding the right one.
If you are like everyone else you are busy. But if you are like many
homeowners you have projects around the house that you want to get done,
and most likely they haven’t even gotten close to completion. You can
shrug it off and say “One of these days I’ll get done with this” or you
can do something about it. Since we can’t add more hours to the day, and
who wouldn’t like to right, you might consider hiring someone to do
some of the odds and ends work around the house. But how do you know the
handyman that you‘ve hired is going to do the job right?
Before you hire anyone to do any type of work around the house the first
thing you need to do is your homework. There are lots of people that
will tell you they can do a job at a certain price just to get the job.
Often times they will run either over time or over budget or even both.
To keep from having to deal with the hassle of a worker like that you
should search around. Going online and doing some research will be the
easiest way for you to get a list of potential workers.
Once you have a handyman list ready you should see if there are any
compliments or complaints about them. There are sites all over the
internet that specialize in warning homeowners which worker does what he
says, or which ones are less than professional. Take the time to peruse
some of these sites and see what others in your area are saying about
them. You might find that one of your top picks to come out for a quote
is less than professional at the job site. Then again, you might be
pleasantly surprised to learn that they are better than gold.
After you’ve used the internet to check out your possible handyman, you
list will probably be narrowed downs some. Call a few and set up an
appointment to get an estimate and to meet the guy. When they come feel
free to ask them if they have a list of references, even if you’ve seen
glowing reviews online this is a great way to verify that those reviews
are accurate. If they are a reputable worker then they will have a list
of clients that have agreed to allow them to be used as references.
If you like what he has to say then call a couple of the references on
his list. Let them know you are considering hiring that person and that
he said they were a former client. No matter who you hire avoid being
listed as a reference until the job is done. You don’t want him telling
people to call you and ask about the service until the job is complete
and you can give them an honest opinion.
