How to Identify AC Repair Scams

Afraid to waste your money on AC repair just to have to call the HVAC professional back again a week later? There are scams and con artists out there, so you need to be prepared.

There are many techniques that shady AC repair companies will use to save a buck or steal one of yours. Within any profession there are going to be scam artists with few business or personal values. Mechanical professions, in particular, are notorious for robbing customers due to their superior knowledge about the specific task or product that needs to be adjusted. Simply by being aware of the scams currently being used, you are halfway to success. The more information you have, the easier it will be to spot the con artists from the genuine experts.

Using inferior or used parts when new have been requested is a common technique among auto mechanics, but even in the world of AC repair is can be quite popular. Using low-grade or thinner copper wiring in systems is one of the prime ways they reduce their costs while simultaneously leaving you dependent on them. Once the air conditioner breaks down in a few weeks, they’ll likely choose the company that they have already made a rapport with, not knowing that they are actually be ripped off again.

In some cases, rather than trying to pawn off bad merchandise, an AC repair company may simply ignore a problem that they see. The more times they come out to visit and replace or maintain parts, the higher their paycheck gets. Some slime balls even develop favorite patsies who they will be guaranteed to visit and drain money from on a regular basis. When you have your air conditioner repaired, be sure to ask if there is anything else that needs work and why. Asking questions and staying interested in the procedure can help deter con artists from pursuing you as a target.

So the AC repair man fixed the problem. Your air conditioner blows cool air again. Well done. Problem solved. Not so fast. Are your energy bills still sky high? Leaving small errors, such as air flow obstructions or improper Freon levels can tack on an extra 10% to 15% on your monthly energy costs. So no matter how much you conserve, you’re still losing out.

So how do you protect yourself from these scams? Read your air conditioning manual. A little bit of knowledge can easily startle and frighten any con artist who steps inside your home. Show them that you know their stuff using as many technical terms as possible to describe the problem. Once you’ve displayed your know-how, they’ll likely back off. Don’t leave them to their own devices as well. You don’t have to hover over them while they work, but check in occasionally and ask for progress updates. Better yet, ask them to show you some of the things that they are repairing and checking.

If you’re worried about parts, seeing is believing. You have the right to request any old parts be returned to you in the packing from the new product. If you want a particular brand of parts, such as those directly from the manufacturer, ask for it. You may have to wait for shipment, but you will have peace of mind.
