How to install new sashes

One of the biggest problems with window sashes is that they can break, and once that happens, it's a pain to deal with that window at all.

If you have broken sashes, your best bet is to make sure that you just replace the sash itself.  This will require you to be careful - you don't want to break any of the glass that you're working with. 

The easiest way to replace an old window sash and install a new one is to use a sash replacement kit.  These kits will come with everything that you need to make sure that you get the window put in place easily.  This will also allow you to put in a new window and reduce the amount of heat lost.  One thing to keep in mind before you start replacing sashes, however, is that you need to make sure that your windows are a standard size first.  That way, you'll be able to find a window that fits.

The exact method for installing a new sash will depend on the type of sash that you have.  However, you can probably figure out how to get the old one out of the window and put the new one in by looking at the parts.  The important thing to do with the old window is to make sure that you carefully disconnect it from any parts of the frame that it might be connected to.

This includes untying any strings that might have broken, and undoing any screws that hold it to the frame.  Make sure that you keep any screws that you take out of the frame, since you will need these later when you put the new sash in.

You should be able to just line up the new sash and slide it into place after you take the old sash out.  Make sure that you put any old guides or screws that came off of the old sash onto the new one.  You will also need to replace the sash lock in order to make sure that the new sash can be locked into an open position if desired.
