HVAC Maintenance: Why It Is Necessary

If you're like most people, you change out your air filters once a month or so and figure you're doing all the HVAC maintenance you really need. But you could be getting so much more out of your system by following a regular, annual routine of having your system inspected by a professional.

If you're like most people, you change out your air filters once a month or so and figure you're doing all the HVAC maintenance you really need, but you could be getting much more out of your system. By following a regular, annual routine of having your system inspected by a professional, you can extend its life and increase its efficiency over the course of its operating years. Yes, as a homeowner, you are always looking for ways to save money. Paying for an annual maintenance of a system that seems to be working just fine seems like throwing money away. In reality, however, you could be preventing a much larger bill from looming in the future by taking these precautionary measures.

Avoiding Bad Surprises

There's little worse than suddenly finding yourself without air conditioning in the middle of a hot summer. At best, it means suffering through a couple of hot days and nights, turning on every fan in the house while you pray for the workday to begin so you can spend it in your nice, cool office. At worst, it means shelling out money for not only the repair or replacement, but for a hotel room so your family can sleep well until the fixes are implemented. If you have your HVAC system inspected annually, sometimes these problems can be foreseen and forestalled ahead of time.

Extend Longevity

Replacing an HVAC system isn't cheap. If well taken care of, a good system can last ten, twenty years or longer. But that's the key phrase: "well taken care of." That includes having annual maintenance inspections. Too many homeowners figure as long as they do the bare minimum, their systems should still last forever. Just like a car, these systems are mechanical and require regular maintenance. Changing the filters on a regular basis is a step in the right direction, but it isn't enough.

Increase Efficiency

Even if there are no overt problems with your HVAC system, it will lose a certain percentage of its efficiency from one year to the next. Let's say it only loses three percent a year. That means that by year five you have a system that is working 15% less efficiently than when you first bought it. Not only is this a drain on resources and the environmentArticle Submission, the differences in your electric bill are going to reflect this. Having your system receive a tune up every year along with some basic maintenance is going to avoid some of this efficiency decline. The savings in your monthly electric bill may be more than enough to cover the extra costs.
