Break out the mint juleps and hush puppies because it’s decorating with southern flair time!  Good,It’s Southern Living Ya’ll! Articles down-home southern decorating style is all about gatherings and get- togethers.  They don’t call it southern hospitality for nothing, you know!  Creating a space that is warm and inviting with a touch of “snobbery” is the true essence of southern living.  These southern living interior design ideas will make a Georgia Peach out of anybody!

Having a color palette rich in textures, patterns and colors truly defines southern decorating.  Don’t be afraid to mix floral prints with plaids and gingham.  Adding an overstuffed couch in a rich tweed fabric topped with an unbelievable amount of throw pillows in floral, stripe, plaid and gingham prints can serve as the focal point in a room.  Adding two or three chairs in coordinating prints (such as the ones used as throw pillows on the couch) will help keep the flow of the room.  Tie in some lovely curtains and you are well on your way to creating a beautiful living space.

As the old saying goes, “the kitchen is the heart of the home”.  That saying certainly rings true for a southerner.  You can easily bring in southern décor to your kitchen.  In your breakfast nook, try adding slipcovers to your chairs in a rooster print (very popular with southerners!).  Make the end chair slipcovers out of a different pattern that coordinates well (perhaps in a red and white gingham check pattern).  Then, since a true southern breakfast nook wouldn’t be complete without it, add a lovely window treatment.  Adding southern touches here and there like a vintage southern cookbook displayed on an easel or a large ceramic rooster can give your kitchen a touch of zeal, southern style!

Since southern living puts a big emphasis on parties and social gatherings, there is no better way to make someone feel welcome than by creating a fun game area.  If you have space in the corner of perhaps your great room or family room, try adding a nice round wood table with 4-6 chairs around it.  Have games easily accessible that are appropriate and fun for all age groups.  Adding a wet bar complete with a sink and mini refrigerator will make snacks and beverages easily accessible and will keep the fun and games going all night long!

Fabrics can enhance any room and when you are decorating with a southern flair, adding as many different coordinating fabrics as you want really can pull the room together.  Covering lamp shades and adding dramatic window treatments in the matching fabrics will add just the right touches that you need to make your southern living room complete.  Using any of the above interior design ideas will land you right in the heart of southern comfort and make your guests feel welcome.
