Keeping Your Home Warm: 3 Types Of Insulation That Are Used Alongside House Siding

Keeping your house warm depends on something you may not even think about, your house siding and insulation. Whether you choose fiber cement or vinyl siding, take some time to research the type of insulation you should use. 

If you're in the market to replace your house siding, there are a lot of things you need to consider. Most people focus on whether they should use vinyl siding, fiber cement siding or another type of material and then next choose the color they want their home to be. However, while the type of materials and the color are the most common things considered, homeowners need to also think about the type of insulation they should use. There are three main types of protection: complete wall protection, permeable wrap and foam. Consider the benefits and negatives of each of these and ask your contractor for advice on which version they think is right for your structure.

Permeable Wrap

Permeable wrap insulation allows moisture to escape, while keeping out wind and water. This is important, because if moisture is trapped within the structure, it becomes a breeding ground for dangerous mold and wood rot. A permeable wrap is used just under the outer materials and needs to cover the entire structure for maximum efficiency. If you're using this type, check to make sure it includes an impermeable vapor barrier that stops the condensation damage that's likely to occur when the air from the outside comes into contact with the interior of the home. Permeable wrap or weather wrap should be present on ever siding project that is taken on.

Fanfold Insulation Alongside House Siding

Another common type of protection is fanfold. This type uses a foam panel that can range from ¼” to ¾ ” thick and provides a stable and flat base for your home's outer layer. The outer materials will go on straight and smooth, creating a professional and flat surface for your house. This is the most common type of insulation used with siding installation on homes and may not be the most effective as it offers more of a flat surface than insulating benefits.

Complete Wall Protection with Foam Insulation

This type is molded to conform to the interior of your vinyl and is now offered for fiber cement siding. Using it keeps cold air from being trapped between the house siding and the insulation. Complete wall protection can cost a bit more than other types because it is formed specifically for each siding make and profile. The surface should feel solid, if you feel a hollow sensation if you push on it, it's likely been improperly cut or installed. Previously, this type was only used with vinyl siding, but recent technologies have made this available for other types, such as fiber cement. When combined with fiber cement house siding, this can create a home that's more than 600% more efficient. This is because this type protects your home against what's known as thermal bridging, a practice that happens when heat bypasses traditional batting and transfers heat and energy out through the studs.

Whether you're installing new house siding to update the current look of your home, or you're focused more on improving energy efficiency, insulation is an important thing to consider. Talk with your contractor about which type of materials and insulation is the best for your home and your geographical location. Make sure to ask questions about what type your contractor typically uses and check to make sure they're experienced in the type you want to use. An improper installation can often void the warranty leaving you stuck with hefty repair bills, so choose a contractor who's knowledgeable and has the customer recommendations to back that up.
