Moving - Reducing the Stress of Relocating

Moving can usher in new opportunities and experiences in your life but preparing to do so can also be draining and stressful. Here we look at some ways to help keep the stress to a bare minimum.

Moving can be stressful regardless of how old or young you are. There are ways however that you can reduce the tension that comes with one of lifeís most stressful experiences and make your move something that you can feel good about.

The more time you have to plan your move the better. However sometimes time is not on our side. If possible give yourself approximately three months (12 weeks) to do everything from pack to hire movers or find people to help you when the relocation date arrives. If you do not have that much time at your disposal then you should be able to pull everything together in two months (eight weeks) time.

To help you regardless of how much time you have to prepare to move you need to be as organized as possible. This is easier to accomplish for those who tend to be organized in their life in general but not so simple for those who are less so. Write up a schedule of everything that needs to get done in the weeks you have to do it. Draw up a list of tasks. Break it down into weekly tasks and from there daily tasks. Check everything off your list. As you check tasks off the list this will help to assure you that that everything is getting done in an orderly and timely fashion.

Moving provides the opportunity to get rid of clutter in your life, both in a physical sense as well as a figurative sense. Before you start filling boxes with your belongings go through your home room by room and de-clutter closets, drawers, cupboards and the like. Donate or throw out items you do not use or no longer need. There is no sense packing things that you will end up tossing once you get to your new home.

Cleaning out clutter can help you feel organized and calmer in a figurative and symbolic sense as well. Perhaps you are holding onto things from your past that are holding you back. When you clear out these things from your past it can help you make the transition between what is behind you and what is ahead of you. Relocating is not just about changing your address, it is also about going forward in your life. De-cluttering and letting go of past items can help you to feel exhilarated about your future.

Some people try to do everything alone when they are getting ready to move. Still others are stubborn or have a difficult time asking for help. Moving is something that all people must do throughout their lives so do not be afraid to ask for a helping hand. This can reduce your stress tremendously.

You need time to bid farewell to the home you have lived in for the years you have lived there, whether they be many or few. If you are leaving the area and/or moving a long way away (such as to another state) then you need to say goodbye to people in your life whom you may see a lot less of once you leave. Do this in whatever manner is best for you. Invite family, friends and neighbors over for a going away party or meal, take walks around your neighborhood, take picturesPsychology Articles, exchange phone numbers and e-mail addresses with those you donít want to lose touch with. Keeping in touch with the memories you have made can help to alleviate the stress connected to relocating.
