Pest Control – Preparing your Home for Winter
Most homeowners go about preparing their home for the winter without keeping one important thing in mind. That is the fact they will need to account for pests trying to enter the home for the winter. In addition to your normal winterizing tasks you will also need to do a few things to keep pests under control. Keep reading to learn about some of these things.
The most important thing you need to do is seal all openings on the outside of your home. Insects can easily enter these openings. Even rodents such as mice and rats can enter openings as small as a dime or quarter respectively.
The only thing determining whether they can fit inside an opening is the size of their skull. They can collapse the rest of their body to fit through once they get their head inside. An opening in which plumbing enters your home is a common entry point. Make sure you check around your water and air conditioning pipes.
You should also pay attention to the bottom of your exterior doors. All sorts of pests can enter through the opening beneath your door if it is too large. You can help keep this from happening by installing door sweeps or weather strips on the bottom of your doors.
It is also a good idea to clear away excess vegetation. Pests will use this vegetation not only as a source of food, but also as shelter. If vegetation is located close to your home, they may decide to move inside at some point.
If you have a chimney, then you will probably be using it over the course of the winter. However this will not keep pests from using it to enter your home. Birds, squirrels, and raccoons in particular are known to enter through chimney openings. You can keep all of them at bay by installing a chimney cap or screen.
Homeowners who use their chimney will also have to store firewood close by. It is best for you to store wood off the ground at the very least. Cockroaches and termites will be attracted to it if it is stored on the ground.
It is important for all homeowners to prepare their home for pests trying to enter during the colder months. Try to limit all openings they can use as entry points. It is a good idea to keep vegetation away since it will attract all types of creatures.
