Roofing is so much more than mere boards, nails and shingles, more than
just the top of the house. The roof is responsible for shielding the
structure and all of the contents inside. It keeps the rain, snow, and
cold out, the heat in and shields the occupants within from a storm or
blazing sun.
It is unlikely roofing is something that the average homeowner devotes
much thought to. After all, it is only seen from the outside and does
not require a great deal of maintenance or upkeep. A new, properly
installed roof made of quality materials can last upwards of 20 years,
so unless there is a leak, storm or ice damage, a homeowner may not
think about the roof over their head.
Roofing manufactures and installers have made great advances in the
quality of materials, styles, colors, textures and even the use of
recycled materials in the manufacturing of some products. Fifty years
ago, certain styles of roof coverings could distinguish the location of a
home: slate or wood shakes were more common in the Eastern regions,
while clay tile was more popular in the South and Western areas of the
country, and metal roofs were primarily reserved for commercial
structures or out buildings on a farm. That is all changing with greener
products available and new approaches to roofing material
manufacturing.
It used to be true that a slate roof was a major investment, the cost
being several times more than standard asphalt shingles, but slate had a
life expectancy of twice maybe three times as long as shingles, so in
the end the investment paid for itself. Many homeowners appreciated the
craftsmanship of wood shingles, but feared the potential fire hazard
they posed, as well as the cost of purchase and installation. But
advancements have been made in the manufacturing of metal roofs, and now
wood shake, slate, and clay tile are just a few of the styles of metal
roofs available to home owners anywhere in the country.
If the roof of the home has a leak, buckles or blistering, a roofing
company should be called in to evaluate the shingles, fascia, flashing
and underlayment. A full tear-off may not be required and a simple
repair or a patch may solve the problem, but only a licensed, bonded,
certified and BBB accredited roofing company can make that decision. A
homeowner should request proof of these certificates prior to allowing
an evaluation, as a roof tear-off and replacement is a large financial
commitment. Only a company that has experienced and trained installers,
familiar with maneuvering around slopes, gables, mansard, peaks and shed
roofs, are experienced with installing flashing around chimneys,
skylights and roof vents, should be hired for the job. If a new roof is
required, ask about warranties, wind ratings, energy-efficient products,

for the style of roof selected. Insist on proof that new flashing and
membrane has been installed, as well as new wood, if necessary. And
prior to the work beginning, inquire about cleanup and disposal of any
debris after the work is done, and whether that cost is included in the

make use of construction material zero-waste landfills.
