Roofing - Maintaining the Roof Over Your Head

You need to be careful when you are having a roofing job done so that you don’t get ripped off. Hail storms, ice storms, even thunderstorms and tornadoes happen and when they do they can damage your home.

Having to replace even a small part of your roof can be expensive, even with insurance footing most of the bill.

There are many things in your home that will have to be replaced throughout your life time. Yes, carpet and paint are probably coming to mind but think higher. While none of us like thinking of the time or cost of having roofing work done, but eventually it will need to be. The question then becomes how you find someone who is qualified to fix the problem without charging you an arm and a leg to help keep the elements out.

Next to plumbing jobs, roofing jobs are probably the most costly repairs you can have done to your home. While a patch job might be all you need, having brand new felt and shingles installed can cost thousands of dollars. If you live in an area that gets frequent storms your insurance might cover the majority of the costs, if you can give them a date that the roof was damaged. Once you can do that you will only have to pay a mere fraction of the cost.

When you are looking for someone to do your roofing job you need to be careful. There are many companies out there that won’t do all that they promise, or some of the work may not be included in their quote. If you are getting a quote for a new roof make sure that you get one that includes removal of the old shingles, replacement of any felt, patching of any weak spots and haul away of all materials. If you don’t you might get a low estimate and believe they are taking care of all that. They may actually just put the new shingles on top of the old ones. In some cases this could void your insurance and any warranty that you may have in it. They might also not include haul away service of the old shingles in their bid, which means you’d be left with a big mess and your garbage company might not haul it away.

When having work done, make sure you do all your homework. While you might find a good deal that will allow you to make payments or defer payment of the insurance deductible there are some that will over bid to cover the deductible. While it might not be illegalFree Web Content, it is a little risky. Your insurance company will do comparisons of other houses and workers in the area and that might mean trouble for you later with your insurance company when it comes to coverage. You might want to be aware of your insurance company’s policy regarding termination and other penalties before going with one of these companies.

Roofing is expensive but it doesn’t have to be done every year. Take as much time as you can to research the project. It could save you money and headaches later.
