If you're like many people, you might not realize the many uses of rugs, such as for indoors and outdoors. You also might not realize the many different materials from which they are made these days. Rugs can sharpen the looks of any porch or patio outdoors. And they can turn a dull, impersonal room or office into a place people will always notice.

And they can be made from either synthetic or natural fibers. Rugs of natural fibers are almost always more expensive than ones of synthetic fibers.

To the unfamiliar, rugs are thought to be used only on the floor or for covering unattractive spots on the floor.

However, there are many more uses. As protection, rugs help prevent dirt or dust buildup. They also help prevent scratches caused by moving furniture or damage from kids rough-housing. On wooden floors, they can be used to insulate against sounds or cold.

Certain rugs are made to be water-absorbent, which means they are very effective in the kitchen or bathroom.

They protect against slips and falls due to water from sinks, tubs, or shoes tracking moisture in from the outside.

In a home or office, rugs can be used to lighten a mood or a make a more formal atmosphere. They are usually an expression of the person living or working in that specific area.

While many people use them for floor decoration, there are just as many people who are discovering other areas they can be used. It is not uncommon to see elegant rugs thrown over a sofa or hung up on a wall.

Outdoor Rugs

You might be familiar with the traditional outdoor rug - unattractive green plastic, resembling artificial grass. Perhaps you also know about the scratchy, woolen types that are used as mats at a home or business's front entrance.

While these are still common, outdoor rugs nowadays are also made out of more elegant or attractive materials. Appealing colors and contemporary styles are also the norm.

Many of these updated outdoor styles and colors can also now be found indoors, too.

As outdoor rugs have become more comfortable and attractive, their uses have expanded beyond the usual. While kids and pets still find them good to play on, many find they are comfortable to sit or sleep on while enjoying nice weather.

Additionally, they have become more common as the fixture around which the rest of a porch or patio is decorated. Often, patio furniture is chosen to complement the rug instead of the other way around.

You cannot believe how easy outdoor rugs are to maintain until you think about how they're built to withstand different kinds of weather. It doesn't matter what is spilled on them, they can be easily cleaned with a hose.

With this kind of low maintenance, there is very little worry about how they're abused by kids, pets, or climate.
