The Moving Company and What Belongings They Won\\\'t Touch
Hiring a moving company can be one of the best decisions you make when it comes to transporting your belongings during a relocation.
Flammables and Hazardous Materials
You probably don't have 55 gallon drums of acetone on hand for transport, but even so, it's important to remember that a moving company wouldn't put it on the truck if you did. Why is it important? Because you probably do have a few things you might be thinking can go right beside your boxes of magazines and big screen television. Things like batteries, fireworks, and pool chemicals. People are often surprised when movers refuse to load these things and often have made no other contingency plans. This usually isn't something the movers can bend on, either, as there are federal regulations in place.
Most people have enough sense not to try and shove their leftovers in a box and give them to the moving company, but if you don't, you should know that they will probably be refused. But it isn't just open food that will be refused. Houseplants and produce will also be met with a stern, "no." Make other arrangements for things such as this. If you are moving to another place in the same city, however, there may be exceptions made for your plants and produce. You can ask the movers about their regulations regarding short distances, as they are usually much more lenient.
Jewelry and Very Personal Items
Rare will be the moving company that won't put jewelry, expensive collectibles, and photo albums on the truck, but you may want to consider whether you want them to or not. It's one thing if your oven mitts get lost in the move; quite another if your wedding photographs do. No matter how well recommended the business comes, you have to take trust into consideration. It only takes one unscrupulous worker to palm something small and valuable. This isn't something you should worry about endlessly, but it does call for taking some common sense steps towards prevention. Keep your small expensive items with you and save yourself the burden.
