So you have a great site with fantastic videos on a range of categories. You’ve identified your target audience,How To Make Sure Your Video Content Gets Found Online Articles defined your brand identity, and determined your estimates for video views. Now the question is: What to do to make sure your audience (and the search engines) find, index, and rank the videos on your web pages?

As part of a broader discussion on DAO (Digital Asset Optimization), this is essentially a topic of Video SEO. You must label your videos with the right keywords relevant to the broad topic and more detailed content. You worked pretty hard to put your video together, now let’s make sure your audience finds it and you get credit for it.

So this is where I start:

  1. Start with one video (or web page) at a time

  2. Define that video’s overall Broad topic(s). Ideally, each video will have only 1-3 broad topics more that than and you’re likely biting off more than the audience can chew.

  3. Make an extended list detailing of the content covered. Don’t write long sentences but rather use 1- 2-word keyword phrases. Be sure to avoid repetition of the terms used in the broad topic list.

  4. Make a concatenated keyword list by combining the Broad topic terms with each Content keyword or phrase. I use the Concatenate function in excel do this. See the example below.

  5. Vet the list to make sure your keywords makes sense. The resulting keyword list will be long and crude. Cut out keywords that are redundant, irrelevant or can be confusing. You may have to simply rewrite the keywords to make sure they make sense and also cut out keywords that are not part of your target.

There are multiple tactics for Digital Asset Optimization for Video:

  1. Creating accompanying show notes with a description of the video,

  2. Developing and transcript of the video

  3. Key images from the video can be posted (with backlinks) on image sharing sites,

  4. And of course optimization of videos going onto YouTube….

I’m going to look at the fundamentals of developing your video’s keyword list for proper tagging and indexation. Let’s dive into this aspect and we’ll cover the other topics in the future.

This exercise will ensure that all of the relevant topics in your video are recognized and indexed by the search engines.

In this example, if your video is about Trends in prescription and fashion eyeglasses for women. The broad topic is Eyeglass Trends

The content will discuss Prescription eyeglasses, Fashion eyeglasses, Women’s eyeglasses, sunglasses, metal frames, plastic frames, eyeglass trends, you get the point. You won’t target women’s fashion, partly because the term is too broad and highly competitive.

So you want to make a list that looks like this:

Content Categories-------------------------------------Broad Topic(s)------------------------------Amended Keywords

-----------------------------------Eyeglass---------------------------Women's eyeglass

Prescription------Prescription Eyeglass-----------Women's eyeglass Prescription--------Women's Prescription eyeglasses

Fashion------------Fashion Eyeglasses--------------Women's eyeglass Fashion-------------Women's Fashion eyeglasses

Metal frames-----Eyeglass Metal frames----------Women's eyeglass Metal frames-----Metal eyeglass frames

Plastic frames----Eyeglass Plastic frames--------Women's eyeglass Plastic frames-----Plastic eyeglass frames

Frames-------------Eyeglass Frames------------------Women's eyeglass frames

Sunglasses--------Eyeglass Sunglasses-------------Women's sunglasses

Trends--------------Eyeglass Trends-------------------Women's eyeglass Trends--------------Eyeglass Trends

Lenses--------------Eyeglass Lenses-------------------Women's eyeglass Lenses-------------Eyeglass Lenses

Concatenate literally means to bring things together. So you are essentially bringing the words from the Broad topic list together with the words from the content categories to create an extensive keyword list.

Use these keywords to tag your web video via the meta source code (title, description, keywords), and as anchor text for on-page and off-page link building related to your video. You can use this exercise when creating keyword lists for your videos or for your web pages.
