How to Find a Criminal Attorney When You Need One

No one wants to need a criminal attorney, but sometimes you find yourself in the position of needing legal assistance. Here is how to find one that is compatible with you.

Chances are, if you are looking for a criminal attorney, either you or someone you know is in desperate need of legal assistance. To find a lawyer who can adequately represent you and meet your legal needs, there are a few things that you can do to narrow down your choices and make a wise decision about who you will hire.

Initially, you need to compile a list of possible lawyers that you could hire as your criminal attorney. A quick glance at your local phone book (or try an internet search) will provide you with a good sampling of lawyers that are available in your area. Try to think of others that you have heard mentioned either via television or radio ads. Perhaps there is a reputable firm in your town or even a legal assistance organization that you have heard of before. Jot all these names down on a master list and go from there.

Next, you will want to see if any of the lawyers or law firms on your master list would classify themselves as a criminal attorney. These types of lawyers have a special burden and extensive training in how to best defend cases in the best interests of their clients. If any of the names on your list specialize in other areas of law, cross them off and focus on the names you have left.

Ideally, you will have at least a few names left on your master list. Conduct a quick internet search to see if you can find out any information about the lawyers or firms. Ask friends and family if they have ever worked with any of these lawyers and whether or not they would recommend their services.

After you have narrowed down your list as much as possible, begin calling through the list and work to secure a few interviews with the ones that you have left. A criminal attorney will typically offer a free consultation. This is an ideal time for you to explain your situation and get a feel for whether or not you are comfortable with the lawyer. At the same time, the lawyer will be determining if he can help you. This is a good time to discuss fees and expectations, too.

It is a good idea to interview a few lawyers before you make your final decision. Obviously, sometimes this is not possible, but you should make every effort to secure the best defense you can. If you cannot make this decision on your own due to incarceration or other roadblock, ask a trusted friend or family member to help you find adequate legal counsel. As a citizen, you have the right to adequate representation for the duration of your case. If you cannot secure legal counsel, the court may appoint someone to represent you. Obviously, this is great if you cannot search for your own representation. However, if you do have the opportunity to chooseComputer Technology Articles, make your best effort to find a criminal attorney that is most compatible with you.
