Engineering Plastics are a subset of plastic materials that are used in applications generally requiring higher performance in the areas of heat resistance, chemical resistance, impact, fire retardancy or mechanical strength. These materials are suitable for applications that require engineering to design parts that perform in their intended use.

WHY ENGINEERED PLASTICS?

Strength and thermal resistance are the most sought after characteristics in polymers used in high-performance applications. While consumer products may be produced using commodity plastics such as polyethylene and polypropylene, products intended for specific applications such as commercial and military aerospace applications, must be produced using engineering plastics or other specialized, high temperature polymers.

Engineering Plastics have better mechanical and thermal properties than most of the widely used commodity plastics (such as polystyrene, PVC, polypropylene and polyethylene). These have higher heat resistance and flame retardancy compared to commodity plastics. These have excellent electrical performance, good insulation and reduce fire risk. Engineering plastics demonstrate good mechanical characteristics, high dimensional stability, good chemical resistance and resistance to wear. Engineering plastics with specific qualities such as flexibility, hydrophilicity, low temperature properties and surface energy are available based on the requirement.

APPLICATIONS

Their mechanical, thermal and fire resistance qualities meet the expectations of demanding markets, including automotive and transportation, construction, energy, consumer goods and industrial equipment. These plastics are used in designing exteriors as well.

The physical properties possessed by this plastics enable these plastics to be used in structural applications, over a wide temperature range, under mechanical stress, and in difficult chemical and physical environments.

Some engineering plastic such as Nylon-6 have their application in the automotive industry (such as airbag containers and automotive covers), E&E (switches, relay boxes, connectors, bobbins, circuit breaker housings), but also in other sectors, ‘robust' examples being office chairs and stadium seats.

Some of the major engineering plastics that are widely in use include – Fluoropolymers, Poly-acetal or Poly-oxymethylene, Polyamides, Nylon-6, Polycarbonates, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Poly-phenylene Oxide, Polyphenylene Sulfide, Styrene Copolymers and Thermoplastic Polyesters.
