Finding The Right Tone For Your Trade Show Stand

Creating great trade show exhibits requires more than just strong design sensibilities. One must also have an innate sense of how to communicate best with visitors - a crucial step for trade show stand success.

Before you begin designing your trade show stand, you have to make an important decision: you must decide what kind of tone you want the unit to have. The tone becomes a guideline for all the other design elements of your booth, determines what kind of staff you want to hire, and even has an impact on any other promotions you might be running at the time. The right tone is a key element of successful trade show exhibits. 
What Is Tone?
There is no one clear indicator of tone. It is the summation of all the elements in your trade show exhibits, the overall message that people will receive. It's the feeling that visitors get when they step inside or talk to your staff. Although it is quite intangible and in some cases difficult to adjust, this detail is crucial to a successful convention experience. People make snap decisions about whether to stay at your booth or move on based upon their first impression, which comes largely from the message you send. Your staff will likely be influenced by it as well, unconsciously picking up and enhancing the feeling of your overall unit. 
Choose Your Message First
It is always difficult to fine tune your message so that it is perfectly aligned with what you'd like it to be. The reason for this difficulty is that many of the facets that make up an impression are out of your control. For instance, sometimes you can't pick your exact placement within the convention, so you cannot ensure that your visitors will approach your unit from the perfect angle. Even small variables like this make a big difference when you are talking about the overall feeling projected by your booth. 
Although it is difficult to ensure that your message comes out perfectly, you can ensure that you get as close to one message as possible. Thus, the first step before any concrete design plans are made is to determine what the ideal message would be. From that point, you can tailor your entire trade show stand to present as close to that message as you can get. It might not be perfect, but the earlier you make the choice, the easier it will be to create a unit that projects it.
Deciding What You Want To Say
Armed with an understanding of what tone is and why picking it early is important, you're ready to think about what tone you want for your trade show exhibits. Start by considering the image of your company as a whole. How do you want people to see you? How do they see you now? The feeling of any trade show exhibits should enhance and build upon your overall company image. 
Next, decide what tactic you want to take for the particular convention you are setting up to attend.
