There are many ways to incorporate island displays into your convention presence, but no matter how you do it, you'll need to make sure they are the appropriate size for the space. At first, deciding on a size may seem simple. After all, you know the dimensions of your current booth and you know the space you'll have at the convention; shouldn't it be easy? However, to determine the right size, you need more than just precise measurements: you need a designer's understanding of how visitors will view your booth.
Option 1: Small Podium-Style Exhibits As Part Of A Larger Booth
With this plan, you'll choose several smaller freestanding units which will help complement a larger structure. This main piece should be a complete exhibit in itself, and should be able to stand alone without the podiums if necessary. In this design, the podiums are quite small, perhaps as little as two inches in diameter. The size can be increased depending on your dimensions and on your needs.
The idea behind this layout is to provide small stations that visitors can access without having to crowd the walls. This is ideal if you have some kind of product testing station that isn't delicate or particularly prone to theft. For example, if you are debuting a new style of mobile phone, you might choose to have island displays with a phone on each, attached securely so that they can't be removed. Having podiums throughout the space ensures maximum room for people to sample without crowding the walls.
Option 2: Bar Style Center Island Displays Within An Exhibit
If you have enough space, you might consider sacrificing some traffic flow for the benefits of having a single large "bar" that adds drama to your space, and provides valuable additional display space. If you choose this type of design, you should strongly consider investing in banner stands or some other type of smaller accents, as the island itself will take up a substantial amount of room. 
Although this large design can be overwhelming, when done properly it can really pay off. You can have a bank of computers on the table, allowing visitors to enjoy a community atmosphere as they test out your sample program. Alternatively, you could use the table for demonstrations or discussion, depending on the venue.
Option 3: Using A Standalone Island
For the truly daring convention presenter, island displays offer another option. You can use them without anything but banner stands to make an exhibit without walls. If you organize the presentation well and ensure that you have prominent banner stands, this type of exhibit can be incredibly successful. The key is to ensure that you still stand out without using the usual tall exhibit walls found around you. Bold design features and crisp metallic accents will help you accomplish that, as will strong banner stands atop the display.
