Giving a humorous speech is not an easy task. Timing needs to be right and the joke needs to be understood and shared by the majority of the audience. It might be tempting to throw in personal jokes that only the couple understands, but it is important to remember the audience. They are being asked to actively listen to what is said and should be included. 

Adding humor into a speech of this type is not complicated.  By simply sharing a funny story that involves the couple, laughs will be gained from everyone that knows them. The story should be appropriate for the audience and simple enough that it can be told easily.
   
The biggest step when giving a speech of any type is preparation. This is not a moment when a person should get up in front of a large group of people and ad-lib. Thinking about what needs to be said and how it should be done takes time and consideration. When preparing, it is also important to think of who the audience is and whether what is being said is appropriate for the situation. After the speech has been written, it is important to also make sure it is a length that will fit the occasion. Practicing the speech will not only allow the giver to be more comfortable, but also allows them to edit the speech, making it perfect.

Giving a speech at someone’s wedding is a special honor. Even so, it is a chance to entertain the guests and humor is a good way to do this. Proper preparation is the key in making it special.
